| HARVEST MOON By Gayla Gongwer The Harvest moon is the full moon falling closest to the Autumn Equinox – on September 25th this year, right behind the equinox on the 23rd. The equinoxes, meaning "equal night," are the two singular days out of the year when the northern and southern hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight, resulting in days and nights of the same length. Usually, on several successive evenings, a luminous moonrise at sunset, and strong moonlight almost all night, will guide farmers who are harvesting crops. The Equinoxes are times of balance, while directing us to times of impending change. The Autumn Equinox acts as counterpoint to the Spring Equinox; springtime energy is speeding up, opposed to the slow down of fall as the sun enters the balancing sign of Libra. Our seasonal harvest festivals celebrate the reaping of what we have sown over the summer, literally and figuratively. It is the never-ending law of karma at its strongest. We will get back what energy we have put forth, in the same manner that we expended it. Positive thoughts, energies, and tendencies put forth will now reward us with the same, multiplied many fold. With this circular return, we enter the season of slower energy, and hibernation, as the earth begins to slowly draw into itself for a winter sleep. |
