                                A Small Act of Kindness

At work, UPS has hired a private contractor to wash all of the UPS package cars at our center.  The company claims that it is more cost effective to do this.  Well, the washers, which consist of usually 3-4 men (sometimes a girlfriend shows up to help), always help us with our work.   We have never asked them for their help but they have always just stepped in and have moved trucks and helped us push our containers around.  They are a great help!

As time went on I would always say to my co-workers, "You know, we should do something for them," but after a year we still didn't do anything.  Then came the day when we were told by management that we had to move all of the trucks for the washers and that they weren't allowed to drive any vehicle.

Well, it wasn't possible for us to help them.  Management always has a way of piling on more duties without giving thought to the burden it would put on such a small crew with already a list that is a mile long!  Anyway, we were compensated with a back pay check of $160.00.  I looked at that check and knew I couldn't accept it.  Those truck washers did the work and they should be entitled to it.  After talking with my fellow employees we decided that the washers wouldn't accept the money so instead bought gift certificates for dinner and the movies.

The looks of thanks and gratitude were worth every cent that we didn't put in our own pockets.  If we all stood back and just looked around, just one small act of kindness would go a long way in this crazy world that we live in.
